Find your Spark

Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire

William Butler Yeats.

Irish poet William Butler Yeats adapted his famous quote from ideas stated much earlier by Socrates and Plutarch. His idea is a great one; pupils should be inspired to learn, not simply filled with facts to remember. All too often such ideas are forgotten in today's exam-focused education system.

At King Henry VIII School we believe that every pupil has within them a spark of talent. It is our job to find that spark and to fan it to a flame of spectacular achievement. Our new film #KHVIIIspark features pupils from every year group enjoying the things at school that they do best; learning, exploring, questioning, being brave and challenging themselves.

The film opens with Year 8 Oscar who is currently wowing the crowds in the West End musical 'School of Rock'. The Year 7 band, Purple Brainz' made a massive impact with their White Stripes cover at the Coventry Young Performer event recently. Other features in the film include pupils finding their spark of talent in Art, Geography, Netball, Chemistry and Cricket. The spark and flame theme even continues into our nationally renowned Outdoor Education programme where Year 10 are currently enjoying their Duke of Edinburgh Award training around the campfire. The film draws to a close with a return to Purple Brainz in full flow and the applause cuts to the Year 13 students receiving their exam results. Whilst the school continues to achieve enviable GCSE and A Level results every year, we also celebrate daily the talents, friendship and enthusiasm of our pupils.

Ours is a special school community and we hope the film gives just a little insight into how your child might thrive at King Henry VIII School.

The making of...

We had lots of fun making the film and were in excellent hands with the Jones Millbank film crew. A few photos were taken whilst the filming took place at school. Thank you to all the students involved. Please share the video!
